UNIMAID ASUU Reiterates Commitment To Quality Of Education

The University of Maiduguri chapter of Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) said strike actions taken by the union is not only to save the public university from collapse but to ensure welfare and quality of students.

Speaking at a press conference in Maiduguri on Thursday, the branch Chairperson of ASUU, Dr Abubakar Mshelia Saidu said the branch which has just concluded it congress had unanimously resolved to abide by the outcome of National Executive Council meeting  on strike action.

“For the avoidance of doubt, Congress has emphatically stated that notwithstanding the payment of Earned Academic Allowance (EAA) and Revitalization Fund to Universities,  the union will not call off the strike action until and unless all issues in dispute are resolved conclusively and the union’s demand are met, including the Re-negotiation of 2009 agreement and implementation of the 2020 MoU,” Saidu said.

While lamenting on the insecurity across the nation and other challenges compounded by Covid-19,  the chairperson cautioned government against introducing economy policies at such critical time that would affect living standards of the people.

“This unfortunate situation has made many people to lose their lives and means of livelihood.

“The huge insecurity, which has remained intractable for over a decade has also worsen with our roads becoming death trap.

“The activities of insurgents, bandits and kidnappers have exposed the weakness of our security agencies. ASUU sympathises with our security agents, who have themselves become victims of insecurity,” Saidu said.

While expressing the condolences of ASUU to the families of security personnel who lost thier lives, it urged for adequate compensation for the bereaved families including sponsoring the education of thier children.

“The union also wishes to salute the gallantry of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) and the local hunters who have sacrificed their lives and comfort to combat criminalities in our country..

“Finally, ASUU, UNICEF Maiduguri chapter appeals to Federal Government to be cautious in implementing adverse economic policies so as not to worsen the already bad economic conditions in the country and make the country in a worst state of disrepair.

“We also like to reiterate our appeal to parents/guardians and our dear students for understanding and support in our genuine efforts to save public universities from total collapse.

“We commend our members for their patience, understanding and continuous loyalty to the union,” Saidu added.
