SWS Inaugurates Borno Chapter Exco, Presents Awards To Personalities 

 

The Standup Women Society (SWS) has formally inaugurated the State  executives of Borno Chapter to serve for two years. 

The inauguration took place on Tuesday in Maiduguri during the 2024 Inauguration/Award Presentation Ceremony of the society. 

The SWS is a national networking forum created as an umbrella to promote women affairs and influence the minds, actions, and practices of the general public at various government levels to support and ensure fair share responsibilities to women.

Speaking at the ceremony, the President of the society, Mrs Deborah Adetuna, who urged for more unity among women, urged them to stop blaming men for impeding their progress, but to see them as partners in progress.

Deborah said it was a misconception for women to continue to think men are against their progress in life as being speculated in some quarters while in reality they are the ones working against each other.

Deborah observed that most of the time they men had been supportive to women, hence the need to work together for a better society. 

“We need to change our attitude and character as well as support our fellow women out there to do good.

“Men are not our problem, we are our problem as we always work against each other’s progress,” Deborah said.

She urged members of the Borno chapter to live up to expectation by setting standards for others to emulate. 

The president cautioned the women not to use the opportunity of being members of the society which stand for the rights of women to start challenging their spouses.

She said they should rather be more supportive of their husbands and communities to showcase what the SWS stand for as builders of good society.

She lauded the Borno Government under Gov. Babagana Zulum for its commitment in women empowerment, tackling Gender-Based violence and promoting children rights.

In her remarks at the occasion, Borno First Lady, Hajiya Falmata Zulum, lauded the society for working for the rights and  welfare of women and other vulnerable in the society. 

Represented by the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Hajiya Zuwaira Gambo, Falmata assured the society of support and collaboration in that direction. 

Highlight of the inauguration ceremony is the presentation of awards and goodwill messages from the Federation of Female Lawyers, National Human Rights Commission, and other organizations promoting women empowerment in Borno. 

Among those honoured are Wife of Borno Governor, Commissioner Women Affairs and Social Development, Sen. Kaka Shehu Lawan, Borno Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice and Comrade Bulama Abiso of Network of Civil Society Organizations in Borno.
