The Borno State Government in collaboration with the office of APC National Women Leader has flagged-off a three-day free medical outreach and mega empowerment programme to commemorate the 56th birthday of Sen. Kashim Shettima, the running mate of Asiwaju Ahmed Tinubu, the 2023 presidential candidate of APC.
A statement from the governor’s wife office said the event which took place on Thursday at the Multi Purpose hall of the Government House Maiduguri.
The event was Flagged-off by the State Governor, Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum represented by the Deputy Governor, Umar Usman Kadafur.
The Governor said that women from the grassroots, mostly the aged and widows were carefully selected across the state to benefit from the gesture in Konduga and Alau community of Jere Local government towards building thier resilience and making them productive members of the society.
“Prof.Zulum said the distribution of this cash support will surely reduce poverty and appeal to the beneficiaries to take advantage of the program to be self employed pointing out that government has put in place mechanism to explore job opportunities through skill acquisition and vocational training which is currently going on in the three senatorial districts of the state.
“He appreciated the APC National Women Leader Dr. Betta Edu for her excellent initiative towards alleviating the hardship of the people particularly women and widows in the state,” the statement added.
It quoted the wife of the Borno State governor, Dr. Falmata Umara Zulum who described the event as timely, saying that it was designed deliberately to rejoice with the APC Presidential running mate, His Excellency Senator Kashim Shettima on his 56th Birthday.
Falmata said the program provided the opportunity to restore and prioritize the health and wellbeing of women and also rekindled livelihood activities as well as reduce poverty amongst women who form bulk of the society.
The Borno first lady also said that the event marked another milestone in translating the party manifesto into reality, particularly in area of humanitarian support to the most vulnerable in the society.
Earlier, the APC National Women Leader. Dr Betta Edu, said that gathering is to celebrate the former Governor of Borno and running mate to the Presidential Candidate of APC who recently turned 56.
Edu said 2,000 vulnerable women and widows benefited from cash support of N25,000 each to boost thier businesses.
“Dr. Betta commended the Borno State Governor Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum for being an active governor towards restoring peace in the State and the developmental projects being executed across the state.
“In her remarks, the Director General National Centre for Women Development Hon. Dr. Asabe Vilita Bashir expressed appreciation to Dr. Betta Edu for the initiative to help women in Borno state.
“In their good will messages, the commissioner for women affairs Hajiya Zuwaira Gambo and the Chairlady NCWS, Bar. Nana Libati said through this special outreach, they were able to diagnose and support women in Konduga Local government and petty traders in Alau.
“They also appealed to APC Women to put more women in the appropriate political offices,” the statement added.
Responding on behalf of the beneficiaries, Hauwa Bakara, expressed appreciation, pointing out that it would go a long way in making them self reliant.
