Raising Attacks: Zulum Storms Abuja, Hold Talks With Service Chiefs

Gov Zulum and COAS in Abuja

Disturbed by the rising cases of Boko Haram/ISWAP activities in Borno State, Gov. Babagana Zulum on Thursday arrived Abuja where he held crucial meetings with military leadership

A statement from Government House Maiduguri Press Unit, said the meetings  were held separately behind closed doors with the Chief of Army Staff, Chief of Naval Staff and Chief of Air Staff,

The meetings centred on the need for a renewed push for coordinated action against the insurgents.

Feelers from the respective meetings revealed that the discussions centred on strengthening military operations in the Northeast as well as improving intelligence sharing for a more effective approach in containing the recent surge in attacks by the terrorists.

The statement recalled that Gov. Zulum had on Tuesday, during an expanded security meeting held in Maiduguri, lamented the recent surge in attacks by the terrorists on civilian and military facilities, where he also urged for decisive action to avert the situation from getting out of control.

“Zulum was accompanied by the senators representing Borno South, Mohammed Ali Ndume, Borno North, Mohammed Tahir Monguno, and Borno Central, Barrister Kaka Shehu Lawan.

Others in the governor’s entourage include Mukhtar Betera Aliyu and Engr Bukar Talba, members of the House of Representatives, and Professor Usman Tar, Borno State Commissioner for Information and Internal Security,” the statement added.

Reports monitored on BBC Hausa Service this morning featured a resident of one of the communities sacked by Boko Haram, who spoke on how the communities of Wajiroko and Sabongari were now under the control of insurgents.

“The insurgents have dislodged the military in the communities and are now roaming around on motorcycles asking people to remain calm.

“We are in serious trouble and need help. Two bridges linking the communities with other areas have been destroyed,” the resident lamented.
