Gov Zulum, Buni, and Fintiri in Pakistan

As part of measures to enhance the recovery process in North East Nigeria after years of insurgency, the governors of Borno, Adamawa, and Yobe states, along with the three coordinators of the World Bank-supported Multisectoral Crisis Recovery Project (MCRP) and the national coordinator have embarked on a study tour to Pakistan.

Led  by Governor Babagana Umara Zulum of Borno State, the delegation is to exchange critical ideas and learn best practices for successful resettlement and economic revitalization in conflict-affected communities of the affected states.

While in Pakistan, the team engaged with key institutions such as the Punjab Municipal Development Fund Corporation and the Punjab Planning and Development Board, as well as other relevant government agencies.

The interactions were said to be among others aimed to gather insights on swift and sustainable post-insurgency recovery plans as well as  development strategies that could be adapted to the Nigerian context.

Zulum, supported by the Borno Project Coordinator, Baba Zanna Abdulkarim, and Technical Coordination Specialist, Dr Ali Umar Bashir, had during the visit held bilateral discussions with Pakistani authorities on a range of topics, including training programs, healthcare initiatives, agricultural development, and economic diversification.

The fruitful exchanges enabled the team to gain valuable insights and identify potential areas for collaboration in the recovery and rebuilding efforts back home.

One of the major highlights of the visit was the discussion on the proper implementation of the MCRP additional financing framework.

Report on the visit indicated that by consulting with experts in various fields, the delegation worked on developing comprehensive strategies to facilitate community revival and economic recovery in the conflict-affected regions of Nigeria that will ensure effective planning and successful implementation of projects that would benefit individuals and communities affected by the insurgency.

According to experts and stakeholders in Borno, the study tour to Pakistan provided a unique opportunity for the Nigerian delegation to learn from the experiences of another country that has faced similar challenges in the past.

They observed that the exchange of ideas and best practices is expected to play a crucial role in shaping the post-insurgency recovery efforts in Northeastern Nigeria through accelerating the socio-economic development of the region.

Meanwhile, as the governors and project coordinators return home, they are poised to implement the lessons learned during their visit to Pakistan, with a renewed commitment to fostering sustainable recovery and resilience in the conflict-affected communities of Borno, Adamawa, and Yobe known as BAY states.
