All is now set for the Tuesday Triennial Delegates’ Conference of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Borno State Council.
A press statement in Maiduguri signed by Timothy Olanrewaju, Chairman 2025 Triennial Delegates’ Conference Credential Committee, and Abdullahi Mustapha, Committee Secretary, said such a conference provides opportunities for journalists to assess their role as watch dogs of the society.
“The conference, which takes place every three years, presents a unique opportunity for members of the Fourth Estate of the Realm to assess their roles in the promotion of peace, stability and social cohesion in the state badly affected by over a decade of insurgency..
“Journalists in Borno have played a critical role in the gradual return of peace even in some instances, at the risk of their life.
“The conference comes at a time when our country marks 65th anniversary of Independence. The choice of the conference theme: ‘Beyond the Threats to Journalism: Strengthening Journalists’ Capacity in promoting Democracy in Nigeria,’ is therefore apt. It is to examine our commitment to the growth of democracy amid challenges facing our country and journalism practice in general.
“The lecture will be delivered by the Commissioner of Information, Home Affairs and Culture, Yobe State, Hon Abdullahi Bego.
“The union appreciates the support of the Borno State government to journalism and journalists in the state, other arms of government, the military, police and para-military agencies and our partners.
“We commend members for striving to uphold professional standard amid very difficult challenges,” the statement added.
