The North East Development Commission (NEDC) has commenced the fumigation of major drainages in Maiduguri town to eradicate mosquitoes and other pests.
Speaking at the commencement of the exercise along Circular Road of the city, the Head of Environment in the commission, Adamu Lawan, said the fumigation was to complement the desilting of the drainages to ensure free flow of water and reduced the risks of flooding in the metropolis.
“The management team of NEDC headed by the MD/CEO Mohammed Goni Alkali is committed to ensuring a healthy environment in the North East,” he said.
Lawan who was represented by his deputy, Aliyu Ishaku, said the first phase of the environmental programme that took place last week, was the desilting of drainages.

According to him, the fumigation and other spray being done now would not only kill dangerous insects like mosquitoes and their larvae, but would also disinfect the areas throughout the season.
He reiterated the commitment of NEDC to hygiene and clean environment to prevent outbreak of diseases associated with the rainy season, and urged residents to always observe proper sanitation to sustain the tempo.
Residents of the circular road and other areas being fumigated, lauded the initiative by the commission which they described as timely and a big relief for residents of Maiduguri.
They observed the development would not only tackle malaria but also other deadly outbreaks like cholera, diarrhea and vomiting associated with the season.
