The North East Development Commission (NEDC) is to establish 40-beds capacity rehabilitation centres in Borno, Yobe, Adamawa, Taraba, Gombe and Bauchi states to facilitate the rehabilitation of mental health patients in the region.
The Managing Director of NEDC, Mr Mohammed Alkali made this known on Thursday in Maiduguri at the presentation of 500KVA Generator to Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital Maiduguri donated by the commission.
Represented by Mr Haruna Waziri, General Manager Operations of the commission, Alkali said the development was in response to a request by the hospital.
Alkali said the commission would also consider the request by hospital for the establishment of a centre for mental health and psychosocial support to accelerate healing of trauma victims of insurgency and other traumatic incidents.
Alkali said the presentation of the 500KVA generator to the hospital which has been extended to other major hospitals in the Northeast was inview of the strategic role of power supply to such health facilities.
In his remarks, the Medical Director of the Neuropsychiatric hospital, Prof. Ibrahim Wakawa, lauded the commission for granting it request for the centres and other interventions worth millions of Naira.
Wakawa also noted that previous interventions in areas of hospital beds, ambulance, COVID-19 support in consumables and Personnel Preventive Equipments (PPEs) and now the 500KVA generator.
“This generator you just brought is not a only timely but life saving.
“It would ensure that we continue providing mental healthcare services to the people and enhance optimum working environment of the institution,” Wakawa said.
