JUST IN: Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun Signs Amotekun Bill Into Law

The Ogun State Executive Council has approved the passage of the Amotekun Bill and has been signed into law by the State Governor.

The proposal for the creation of the Western Nigeria Security Network codenamed Amotekun was approved during the SEC meeting at the Executive Chamber of Governor Dapo Abiodun’s office.

South-West governors launched the regional security outfit in Ibadan, Oyo State on Thursday, January 9 to combat kidnapping, banditry and other violent crimes in the region.

Some groups in the north had condemned the outfit, describing it as a prelude to the declaration of Oduduwa Republic. After the initial controversy, the Federal Government finally backpedaled on the declaration of the outfit as illegal.

However, in a report given earlier  it was revealed thatone of the laws contained in the ‘Operation Amotekun’ bill includes a payment of fine amounting to N250,000 or a month’s prison term or even both for anyone who assaults an officer of the security outfit.

It further reveals that an official of the security outfit can also not be sued for any action taking while carrying out his duty, but will only be queried base on what he does in his personal interest outside the operation.
