Just In: Buhari appoints Major General Farouk Yahaya as new COAS

Nigeria’s President, Muhammadu Buhari has appointed Major General Farouk Yahaya as the new Chief of Army Staff.

According to statement from Acting Director Defence Information, Brigadier General Onyema Nwachukwu, Major General Yahaya was the General Officer Commanding 1 Division of Nigerian Army and the present Theatre Commander of Counter Terrorism, Counter Insurgency, military outfit for North East, code named Operation HADIN KAI.

Major General Yahaya’s appointment came about a week after the former Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Ibrahim Attahiru and 10 others died in a military plane crash in Kaduna.

The Air Force in a statement said the plane crashed near Kaduna airport and will investigate the immediate cause of the crash.
