The Iranian government has commended President Muhammadu Buhari-led government for allowing a foreign medical team to examine Sheikh Ibrahim El-Zakzaky, the leader of Nigeria’s Shiite community, and his wife.
In a statement on Saturday, the Iranian foreign ministry spokesman, Seyed Abbas Mousavi, expressed hope that the trend would further open up interaction and constructive talks between authorities of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria, IMN, and the Nigerian government.
According to him, such interaction would result in the settlement of problems and the release of the top cleric.
A group of medical experts and consultants has completed on Thursday its initial health assessment of Nigeria’s top Muslim cleric Sheikh Ibrahim El-Zakzaky and his wife who have been in detention since late 2015.
The delegation led by UK-based Islamic Human Rights Commission, IHRC, visited the cleric and his wife, Mallima Zeenah, on Thursday and highlighted the need for urgent investigations into their health which it hoped would be carried out in the next couple of days.
The IHRC, an NGO which campaigns for justice, said in a statement it “acknowledges the authorities’ change of position in making this possible and hopes this heralds a full and just resolution of the situation.”

This is a very good and excellent move. May God heal the wounds of his Highness Shaikh Zakzaky and his family. May God also give more courage to his Excellency President Muhammad Buhari to release the ailing Shaikh, pay compensation to him and find a ground upon which a peaceful coexistence can be possible.
The Nigerian government will do good for this nation if it stops listening to those who advises her to kill Shiites or continue detaining them unconstitutionally as that can only push more unrest in this northern region that is plagued with a lot of blood shed.
There is no doubt that Shaikh Zakzaky deserves
the highest respect that any nationalist of any country in this workd should be given for his refusal to allow any of his supporter carry arms against authority or any individual despite the unjust massacre carried against him and his followers, in this country where politicians sponsor killings of innocent people mercilessly because they (innocent) fail or refuse to give them their votes.
