Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno says his administration will construct no fewer than 200 schools as part of measures to meet the need of public schools in the state.
Zulum made this known on Tuesday while inaugurating the permanent site of Government Day Secondary School, Maiduguri, constructed under the Adolescent Girls Initiative for Learning and Empowerment (AGILE) project.
Zulum said his administration would ensure an adequate number of standard schools in Borno so that his successor could concentrate on other services in the area of education.
He said that qualified teachers had been recruited while teachers in need of training are being provided with the required training, adding that within one year, any teacher without the requisite qualifications to teach would be redeploy to areas like environment to engage in tree planting.
Zulum said that under the AGILE, the state is expected to built 52 schools and had constructed over 40.
“We only have five schools still pending to be constructed in Chibok, Gwoza, Bama, Beneshiek and Marte,” Zulum said.
In his speech, the Borno Commissioner for Education, Mr Lawan Abba, said that from 2019 to date, the Zulum administration had constructed 120 schools.
Abba said that under the back to school programme of the administration, school items had been provided to 100,000 students for the 2024/25 session.
Also speaking, the National Project Coordinator of AGILE, Hajiya Amina Buba, lauded the Borno Government for its commitment to education and assured it of sustained collaboration.
Buba said that Borno school projects have remained a reference point of how schools ought to be.
“Borno is one of the best states in the implementation of AGILE,” Buba said.
