The North East Development Commission (NEDC) has commenced the desilting of drainages in the six North East States of Borno, Adamawa, Yobe, Taraba, Bauchi, and Gombe.

The Managing Director of the commission, Mr Mohammed Goni Alkali, made this known on Tuesday while inspecting the desilting exercise and other environment friendly projects of NEDC in Maiduguri town.

Alkali said the exercise which involved desilting of over one million metres of drainages in the six states of northeast was to mitigate flooding.

“In Maiduguri, we are desilting 250,000 metres of drainages. We are going to do similar interventions in other states,” Alkali said.

He noted that the exercise has provided jobs for many youths, adding that other areas of intervention by the commission to contain global warming included installations of solar street lights.

“We are also engaged in improving Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH), and in the last count we have over 50 solar powered boreholes in Maiduguri town alone not to talk of the ones in local government areas.”

According to him, the commission was also looking into creating dump sites and facilities to harness waste to wealth.

The NEDC team led by the Managing Director had during the inspection tour also assessed water and solar street lights projects in Maiduguri.

Meanwhile, many youths and residents who spoke on the projects by NEDC, lauded the initiative which they said not only added value to sanitation and hygiene in the metropolis at this critical time of flood and outbreaks, but also enhanced security and created jobs to many, particularly youths in the town.
