The Emir of Shani in Borno State, Alhaji Muhammadu Nasiru Mailafiya, has urged for effective collaboration of stakeholders under ACReSAL project in addressing the challenges of climate-change in Shani LGA.
The call was made by the Royal Father while receiving members of the ACReSAL team who paid him a visit at his palace.
According to a statement by the Communication Officer of Borno ACReSAL, Timothy Butu Mwada, the Emir lauded the collaboration between Government, NGOs and other development partners under ACReSAL to tackled desertification and other environmental threats to the state.
“He lamented the devastating effects of erosion which is threatening the area over the years and seek the support of ACReSAL to come to their aid in tackling erosion bedevilling their area.
“The Royal Father thanked the Governor of Borno State, Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum and assured his support to ACReSAL project to achieve its objective in Borno state,” the statement added.
In his remarks earlier, the Executive Director of Global Environmental Responds Initiative, the implementing partner, Dr Ngare Dogo, said Shani Local Government was among the LGAs selected to provide 25 hectares of land for the plantation of woodlots.
Dogo said that the woodlots were part of measures under the project to mitigate the effect of climate change.
He explained that the team was also in Shani to sensitized and inaugurate the Local Government Project Management Committee (LGPMC) members who would serve as implementation partner of ACReSAL in the locality.
In his goodwill message, the Project Coordinator, Mr Ayuba Peter, represented by the project Engineer, Babagana Ladan, said ACReSAL is a 6-year project that would help in reducing the vulnerability of millions of the extreme poor people in the Northern Nigeria as well as strengthening their roles in line with achieving environmental sustainability.
He also urged the members of LGPMC to be dedicated in their roles a a very important committee at the local level.
Highligh of the visit by the team to Shani is the inauguration of LGPMC by the Shani LG Chairman, Prof. Jibrin Musa Dibal who was represented by the Vice Chairman, Ilyasu Mohammed.
He expressed happiness with ACReSAL project in the area and tasked the committee to be diligent and work as a team to achieve the desired objectives of the project.
The Monitoring and Evaluation Officer, Bukar Madu Goba, congratulated the new members of the LGPMC and urged them to cooperate and collaborate with staff of the SPMU for a united front in achieving the overall objectives of the ACReSAL project in the area.
Also speaking, the Livelihood Officer, Yafati Mustapha, said that part of the ACReSAL project objectives was to make sure that many people are lifted out of poverty, adding that women would be given special attention under the project.
ACReSAL promotional songs and drama are displayed to enhance the sensitization messages on the project to the people of Shani.
