As part of efforts to support the government in cushioning the effect of the Covid-19 lockdown on the less privileged, the Kewarlam Chanrai Group, through one of its subsidiaries, Afcott Nigeria Limited, has distributed food items to 600 families in each of the 16 communities in Yola South Local Government Area of Adamawa state.

The food items were distributed to the beneficiaries directly in all the 16 communities through the identification of Primary Health Care Project of Tulsi Chanrai Foundation (TCF) and the village heads.

Speaking at the flag-off of the distribution, the Group Managing Director of the company, Mr. Siva Subramanian, said that the company decided to support families to cushion the hardship Covid-19 has brought to the people.

The distribution to the 16 communities, according to him, will be in three phases.

“We are committed to the social development of the underprivileged people and through the TCF that managed our PHC project in Adamawa state, we were able to identify those families that needed the palliatives,” he explained.

The Group Managing Director who was represented by the General Manager Afcott Nigeria limited, Mr. Pannir Selvan, stressed that, apart from supporting with food items and providing quality health care to the people, “we are also creating awareness via postal billboards on how to control the spread of the disease and also providing medicated soaps to vulnerable households around the catchment areas of primary health project in Yola South Local Government.”

On his part, the PHC Project Program Manager, Mr. Devendra Sonawane, disclosed that during the lockdown, the TCF PHC project provided health care services for people within its catchment areas, noting that in April this year, TCF treated close to 10,000 patients including pregnant women and children who were vaccinated.

Also, 432 mal-nourished children were provided with therapeutic and food supplement.

Items distributed to the communities included 600 cartons of ready- to-eat food, 600 units of edible oil, 600 units of powder milk (400gms) and 1,800 tablets of medicated soap.

Responding on behalf of the leaders of the communities, Mr. Adamu Mohammed, commended the Kewarlarm Chanrai Group for giving them the palliatives directly, stressing, “there is no cheating by any one, we are so happy and we wish other companies will emulate them. Apart from these items, we have also received good health care services.

“Our wives and children are well taken care of at no cost, they also educate us on how to control the spread of Covid-19 and provided hand washing buckets, soap and sanitizers in our areas.”

Speaking, one of the beneficiaries, Hadiza Aliyu, who was visibly elated, said: “I am very happy I got these items. I am a widow with two children, since the lockdown, it has been very difficult for me because I could not get to the market as usual but with this palliative, I and my family will continue to have something to fall on.”

The next phase of the distribution will be in June while similar distribution had taken place in Zaria and Abuja.
