The Borno State Committee on Buffer Zones Demarcation has so far marked about 500 structures constructed along key waterways in Maiduguri city.
A statement on Monday by the committee, said the identified structures are in areas so far assessed by the committee comprising Lagos Bridge, Forestry Quarters, Fori, Galtimari, and Shettimari New GRA extension.
The committee urged for support and cooperation from residents as it expands its work to other affected areas of the city.
“This exercise is part of the Borno State Government’s efforts to delineate buffer zones along Maiduguri’s waterways and its environs, with the aim of reducing flood risks, protecting communities from hazards posed by unregulated developments, and promoting effective urban planning.
“The committee is committed to expanding its assignment in additional key flood-prones locations and appeals to residents to fully cooperate and support the government in creating a safer environment for everyone, as stipulated by land-use laws governing development near waterways,” the statement added.
The constitution of the committee came after the recent devastating flood from Alau Dam that affected the city and environs resulting in loss of many lives and property.
