The North East Civil Society Forum has observed the vital role of North East Development Commission (NEDC) in the ongoing reconstruction, rehabilitation and resettlement process in the region and urged the commission to remain committed to its mandate.
The forum which is an umbrella organisation of all registered civil society organisations in Northeast, made the call in a press statement after its two-day retreat in Maiduguri over the week.
The forum urged the commission’s management to shun politicking and concentrate on it mandate for maximum result.
“The North East Civil Society Forum is also hereby cautioning the NEDC management to concentrate on delivering its mandate of service delivery to the affected population in north east, rather than paying attention to or engaging in politicking at the expense of the people they are supposed to serve,” the forum advised.
The forum statement disowned membership of a group called North East Vanguard for Good Governance, adding that its investigation showed that the group is non existent and does not have physical presence or existing officials in any state in north east.
The forum commended the improved security measures taken in the region by the military and other security agencies and urged for sustenance.
“While reviewing the safety and security of the citizens and the fight against insurgency in the region, we observed improved security measures by security agencies in the region and urged them to sustain the tempo.
“The forum commend the security agencies for the new measures and strategies, especially the recent improvement in civil/military relationship and interaction with citizens and stakeholders..”
It also lauded international partners and donors for their support, and also called on UN agencies, INGOs and their partners to set up plan for genuine and deliberate localisation of their activities for maximum effect on the public.
