Abdulkareem Haruna
*Inaugural Speech of Comrade Abdulkareem Haruna on His Elevation as the New Chairman of the NUJ Borno State Council on October 23/2024.*
Distinguished members of the Nigeria Union of Journalist (NUJ), esteemed guests, and fellow colleagues,
Today, I stand before you with immense honor and deep gratitude as I assume the role of Chairman of our beloved Union. I would like to begin by expressing my heartfelt appreciation to our outgoing chairman, Comrade Dauda Iliya, who has served with unwavering dedication and has recently been appointed as Special Adviser to the Governor of Borno State. His vision and mission have been instrumental in guiding our Union, and we are all grateful for his leadership. I am committed to upholding the values and goals he set forth, which we all cherish.
I am committed to advancing the professional development of our members. Together, we will continue to enhance opportunities for training, workshops, and mentorship that empower our journalists to excel in their roles, enabling them to contribute meaningfully to the state’s development goals.
Partnership for development will be a cornerstone of my leadership. We will actively seek collaborations with the state government, media organizations, our esteemed veterans and civil society to ensure that our Union plays a pivotal role in the rebuilding process of our dear state. Together, we can create an environment where journalism not only thrives but also supports the collective growth of our society.
Welfare is a critical issue for our members, and I assure you that I will prioritize this aspect of our work. We will advocate for better working conditions, fair remuneration, and comprehensive support systems for all our members. A healthy and motivated workforce is essential for the vibrancy of our union and our ability to serve our communities effectively.
Discipline among members is an area that requires our collective attention. As we strive for excellence, we must hold ourselves to the highest standards of ethics and professionalism. I will work to instill a culture of accountability and integrity within our ranks. Together, we can cultivate an environment where excellence is the norm, reinforcing our reputation as journalists with pride.
As I take on this responsibility, I pledge to lead a union of professionals dedicated to supporting the state government in achieving its vision as outlined in the 25-Year Development Plan of Professor Babagana Zulum. As we step into the post-conflict phase following the Boko Haram insurgency, it is imperative that we position ourselves as vital partners in the rebuilding and development of our state. Our work as journalists will be crucial in fostering understanding, promoting peace, and encouraging the narratives that inspire hope and resilience in our communities.
I also want to extend my full support to our new media adviser. His role will be vital in navigating the rapidly evolving landscape of journalism, particularly as we engage with the state’s development plans. I encourage all members to collaborate and engage with him, sharing your ideas and insights as we move forward together.
In closing, I ask for your support as we embark on this journey. Our union is only as strong as its members, and I believe that with unity, determination, and a shared vision, we can achieve great things. Together, let us uphold the values of the NUJ and work tirelessly to contribute to the reconstruction and progress of our state.
I thank you all.
