NECSOB Urges More Humanitarian Support To Vulnerable Members Of The Society
The Network of Civil Society Organizations in Borno (NECSOB) has urged government at all levels, organizations and philanthropists to intensify support to the needy at this critical moment.
NECSOB made the call in a statement in Maiduguri in reaction to the current hardship occasioned by the removal of fuel subsidy and raising inflation in prices of goods and services.
The statement signed by the leader of the network in Borno, Mr Bulama Abiso, appreciated the efforts so far by government and individuals in the state towards the people in need citing the latest support to a needy family of a woman whose video went viral digging anthill in search of grains to eat.
“The Network has acknowledged with deep appreciation the positive response from members of the public from all walks of life who supported and are currently supporting with various forms of intervention to the affected individuals and beyond.
“We would like to extend our profound appreciation to the state government and other relevant partners from the humanitarian sector for the support they have been providing to the citizens to facilitate recovery following over a decade long insurgency that has ravaged our communities from all ramifications..
“It has also come to our notice that the state-owned Borno State Renessience Microfinance Bank has visited the affected person and are taking all necessary actions to ensure that she and other people facing similar challenges have received the desired attention,” Abiso said.
He said that a stakeholders meeting would be held next week to discuss the current situation faced by the people in some communities and displaced person camps so as to make appropriate recommendations to the authorities concerned.
“The network also wants to extend its sincere appreciation to well meaning individuals who have been supporting through various platforms with their donation in favour of the vulnerable people in our society, notably among is the appeal launched by one of our members (Swift Relief Foundation) who is receiving donation on NorthEast Forum (a WhatsApp platform) that is aimed at providing for identified individuals will similar cases in our communities,” the network said.
Gov. Babagana Zulum at a recent function in the state by National Agricultural Land Development Authority (NALDA) said that two million out of the over three million people displaced by the insurgency in the state have been resettled.
He urged NALDA to assist his administration, now committed to reconstruction, rehabilitation and resettlement in clearing 100,000 hectares of fertile farm land for returnees along the shores of Lake Chad.
Zulum said that the land had remained uncultivated for the past 10 years due to the insurgency.
