Ahead of 2023 General Election, all is now set for the Monday Aug.15 (tommorow) hosting of Police training in Maiduguri on Security Management.

The training was workshop was first flagged-off  in Abuja penultimate Thursday by the Nigeria Police Force in collaboration with Solar Security and Consult Company Limited.

The lead facilitator of the training and former Inspector General of Police, Dr. Solomon Arase (rtd)  had last week moved the workshop to the Kano training centre, the Northwest geopolitical zone of the country.

Dr. Arase told reporters on Sunday that after the successful flag off of the workshop in Abuja, and the Northwest geopolitical zone in Kano training Centre, it was the turn of the Northeast geopolitical zone to benefit from the training. He said the training Centre for the zone is Maiduguri.

Themed “The 2023 General Elections: Enhancing National Security Capacity for a Secure and Credible Electoral Process in Nigeria,” the training aims to broaden the professional knowledge and operational capacity of officers with a view to closing the knowledge gap that could inhibit the optimal delivery of election security mandate.

The idea was to expose personnel to tailor-made training ahead of the 2023 General Elections. The curriculum includes courses such as the current state or security and police preparedness for 2023 general elections – constitutional role of the Nigeria Police Force on election security; election security management: challenges and approaches.

Additionally, the lectures involve issues and challenges towards the 2023 general elections in Kano state and the North West geopolitical zone. Part of the discussion is an assessment of election threats in Nigeria; best practices in election security, security of elections of election officials and materials, security of voters, protection of national voters.

A major topic for consideration would be inter-agency collaboration in election security management; mandate of the inter-agency consultative committee on election security, concretizing inter agency synergy on election security operations. Besides, legal framework for election in Nigeria would be discouraged just as an overview of the electoral laws and guidelines in Nigeria, electoral act and constitutional provision on security, the role of security agencies in the electoral process.

Other courses are; foreign observers/civil societies, organizations and election observation in Nigeria; election security: global perspective. Electoral offences and punishments, human rights issues/security concerns for vulnerable groups during elections – voting in IDP camps and conflict prone areas, security provisions for the marginalized, vulnerable and persons living with disabilities during elections.

Equally up for discourse at the workshop is media relations and security functions towards effective public communication for election – effect of new social media during elections, security of media personnel as well as managing officers’ mental health and stress during election.
